They are described as follows: MPing: a tool for detecting multicast services. We also use these generalizations to evaluate some of the more recent efforts to develop large-scale management platforms. Multicast ping (MPing) and multicast tracert (MTrace) have been developed to provide users with the multicast service detection and fault diagnosis functions. Using these generalizations we present two of our efforts to evaluate multicast reachability in the Internet. Through this survey, we have observed important generalizations in three areas: (1) the challenges unique to monitoring multicast, (2) a methodology common to many multicast monitoring tools/systems, and (3) a set of considerations important to the development of new tools/systems. In this paper we first survey the debugging, modeling, and management tools that have evolved along side the Internet's multicast infrastructure.
Originally developed by Apple it goes under the name of Bonjour. Request PDF On Jan 1, 2004, Pavan Namburi and others published SSM-ping: A ping utility for source specific multicast.
I have as far as i can remember used it only for testing in DVMRP based multicast environment, but i sure it works fine with PIM. I have frequently used this utility to confirm the multicast reachability between two points. By submitting this Internet-Draft, each author represents that any applicable patent or other IPR claims of which he or she is aware have been or will be disclosed, and any of which he or she becomes aware will be disclosed, in accordance with Section 6 of BCP 79. Mping is a simple command line application that sends and receives multicast packets. Multicast DNS is used to locate a device or service by name on a small local network without using a preconfigured name sever i.e DNS. Multicast Ping Protocol draft-ietf-mboned-ssmping-04 Status of this Memo.
In order to bridge the gap between the initial deployment experiments and the availability of multicast as a robust network service, there needs to be a full complement of multicast monitoring tools. Multicast DNS is part of Zero-configuration networking set of technologies designed to enable devices to work on networks without manual setup. The server should specify the TTL (IPv4 time-to-live or IPv6 hop-count) used for both the unicast and multicast messages (TTL of at least 64 is recommended) by including a TTL option.
Over the last ten years, multicast research as well as deployment efforts have both been major areas of interest. Multicast Ping Protocol (RFC ) RFC 6450 Multicast Ping Protocol December 2011 Both replies are sent from the same port on which the request was received. An example of one of these next-generation services is multicast communication, the one-to-many delivery of data.
All participating network devices on the same local link perform standard DNS functions, using multicast DNS rather than unicast, and do not need a unicast DNS server. Supporting multicast deployment efforts: a survey of tools for multicast monitoring Supporting multicast deployment efforts: a survey of tools for multicast monitoringĪs the Internet is expected to better support multimedia applications, new services will need to be deployed. Multicast DNS (mDNS) provides a naming service system that is easy to set up and maintain, for computers on a local link.
